That’s right, I hit 100 on the wuss factor Sunday morning. I took one look at the weather in Kenosha and opted not to race. And, I had actually been looking forward to racing in bad weather. Maybe I hit my head on something, but a 25 MPH headwind at the finish and temps in the lows 30s didn’t sound like fun. I froze to death in my last race up there in similar conditions a few weeks ago. Nope, I thought I’d get some good training in…an easy ride on the lakefront and some LT intervals indoors.
Well, I didn’t realize how bad the headwind was. My easy 2 hour ride along the lakefront started great with a nice tailwind south, but by the time I headed back north I could understand why some people were walking their bikes. It’s amazing how big and ferocious the Great Lakes can get with the wind. I ended up with Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in my head. Yes, it’s more appropriate for November. Here’s the video if you have no clue what I’m talking about:
I checked my power readings after my ride. My average speed going north was 14.5 MPH, with an average power of 268 watts. In most of my time trials last year, that would have netted me an average speed over 24 MPH. Got to love the wind along the lake!
Despite going harder than I wanted to along the lake, I was adamant about doing my LT intervals. However, I had a feeling when I started that I wasn’t going to make it through. Yep, I ended up struggling through 20 minutes, rather than 40. However, when combined with my total time at LT…yikes! I was pretty tired Sunday night. Now, I just need to get rid of this sinus pain.
