San Diego Training Camp – Day 2

The weather for the weekend isn’t looking great. Rain for both Saturday and Sunday. Hmmm. I might was well do my longer ride today, since it’s supposed to be sunny with temps in the 60s. Good idea. I had a wonderful ride. I decided to ride all the way to Orange County. Once I got to Camp Pendleton, most of the ride was on low or no traffic roads. Plus, I got to watch Apache helicopters in maneuvers.

You need a driver’s license to enter Camp Pendleton, but the guards are really nice, the drivers tend to be in their early 20s (aka, drive fast but are actually focusing on driving), and you get to see cool military hardware in action. An interesting contrast to old Fort Sheridan in IL, which has turned into condos…:)

I had a strong headwind today, but that was a great on the way home. I was happy for how strong I felt through 60 miles.  I had great power readings and really didn’t start to bonk until Mile 60. Stopped at Starbucks to get a cookie and Coke, but the line was out the door. So, California. Stopped at 7-11 instead.

Thankfully, the sun wasn’t too strong, so I just got tan, rather than burned. Funny how in just a few weeks in Chicago, we’ll either have this weather or it will be rainy and in the 30s.
